How HNA Swivel Works

1. Normal Swivel Working Principle

The HNA standard swivel mainly realizes two core functions: suspension of drill string and circulation of drilling fluid. Its central pipe runs vertically through the whole equipment. The upper gooseneck connects with the rotary hose to input high-pressure mud, and mud flows down through the central pipe into the kelly and drill string to reach the bottom of the well for rock cleaning and cooling. The master bearing and crosshead assembly bear the entire weight of the suspended drill string, while allowing free rotation of the central pipe and drill string during rotary drilling. The split washpipe cassette installed between the gooseneck and central pipe forms a dynamic sealing system, which prevents high-pressure mud leakage when the central pipe rotates continuously relative to the stationary gooseneck, ensuring stable mud circulation under high pressure.

2. Double-Duty Swivel Working Principle

On the basis of the circulation and load-bearing structure of ordinary swivels, the double-duty swivel adds an independent air motor clutch transmission system inside the shell. Compressed air drives the built-in air motor, and power is transmitted to the small pinion through friction clutch plates. The pinion meshes with the large gear fixed on the outer wall of the central pipe to drive the central pipe to rotate independently. This auxiliary rotation can finish the makeup and breakout of drill pipes separately without relying on the main rotary table of the drilling rig, which effectively reduces the operating load of the main rig. The mud circulation sealing system works in the same way as the normal swivel.
