How Workover Rig Works

Working Principle of Truck-Mounted Drilling & Workover Rig

This equipment is an onshore oilfield device integrating drilling and workover functions, built on a heavy-duty off-road truck chassis to enable fast whole-unit site transfer. Its operation is completed through the coordinated work of 8 core systems, supporting both drilling and workover core operation scenarios.

1. Basic Power Transmission Logic

The main diesel engine of the rig can be configured to meet emission standards for different target markets: EPA Tier 4 for North America, Euro V for CIS/EU markets, GSO standards for the Middle East, and is also compatible with low-sulfur fuel. The power output is split into two paths: one is transmitted to core operating hosts including the drawworks, rotary table/top drive, and mud pump via the transmission system; the other drives the hydraulic system to supply power for auxiliary actuators including the derrick lifting system, hydraulic outriggers, hydraulic power tongs, and elevators. All operations are uniformly coordinated by the central control console with integrated sensors, which monitors operating parameters of all systems in real time.

2. Working Principle Under Drilling Conditions

Drilling is a typical rotary drilling operation, completed through the coordinated work of three core systems:

Rotary Drilling System: Power is transmitted to the rotary table or top drive to rotate the drill string composed of kelly, drill pipe, drill collar and drill bit. The drill bit directly crushes rock at the bottom of the well to advance the well depth; the drill collar applies preset weight on bit (WOB) to the drill bit via its own weight to ensure drilling efficiency.

Drilling Fluid Circulation System: The mud pump pressurizes the configured drilling fluid and sends it to the bottom of the well via the high-pressure manifold, swivel, and hollow drill string. The fluid sprays out from the drill bit nozzle at high speed, carries cuttings up along the annulus of the wellbore to the surface, and is purified by solids control equipment including shale shakers, desanders, and desilters for reuse. At the same time, it functions to cool the drill bit, stabilize the wellbore, and prevent wellbore collapse.

Hoisting Control System: During drilling, the drawworks controls the lowering speed of the hook to accurately adjust the weight on bit. When the drill bit is worn and needs replacement, or when the drill string assembly needs adjustment due to complex formations, the drawworks lifts the entire drill string via the hoisting system composed of the crown block, traveling block, and hook to complete tripping operations, and can also perform casing running and other operations.

3. Working Principle Under Workover Conditions

Conventional workover operations do not require starting the rotary drilling and drilling fluid circulation systems, and are completed through the coordination of the hoisting system and wellhead operation system:

The drawworks drives the hook, elevator and other tools via the hoisting system to complete the lifting and lowering operations of downhole tubing, sucker rods, packers, electrical submersible pumps (ESP) and other wellbore string tools. The matched hydraulic power tongs, hydraulic slips, and automatic flip elevators can automatically complete the make-up and break-out of tubing strings, supporting routine workover tasks including pump replacement, water shutoff, pump inspection, fishing of downhole dropped tools, and wellhead troubleshooting. High-automation models also support one-key control of string lifting/lowering and automatic positioning, greatly reducing manual operation intensity at the wellhead.

4. Special Environment Adaptation Logic

In response to extreme operating environments in different target markets, the system is adjusted accordingly to ensure normal operation:

For extremely cold regions such as Russia and Central Asia with temperatures as low as -40℃, a standard engine and hydraulic oil preheating system is equipped to ensure one-key start at low temperatures;

For desert regions in the Middle East, sand-proof seals and a high-efficiency heat dissipation system are equipped to adapt to high-temperature and sandstorm environments;
