How Downhole Motor Works

This is a positive displacement downhole motor, which takes drilling fluid as the power medium and realizes energy conversion and power output through the meshing structure of rotor and stator.

High-pressure drilling fluid is pumped into the motor cavity through the internal passage of the drill string. When the fluid flows into the sealed gaps between the multi-lobe spiral stator and rotor, a pressure difference is formed inside the closed chambers. Driven by fluid pressure, the eccentrically mounted rotor performs combined rotation and revolution motion. The rotary power generated by the rotor is transmitted sequentially through the universal joint assembly and drive shaft to the bottom sub, and finally drives the drill bit to rotate and break rock.

After passing through the internal flow passage of the motor, the drilling fluid discharges from the bit nozzles to circulate mud, cool the bit and carry cuttings. For models with adjustable bent housing, the deflection angle can adjust the tool face to realize directional drilling, build-up angle and hold-angle operations. Equipped with customized sealing and liner components, the motor is compatible with water-based mud, oil-based mud, air and foam fluid. It operates stably under high temperature, high salinity and other harsh downhole conditions. As an independent downhole power unit, it works without rotary power supplied by the surface rotary table.
